Today John
Deere lawn tractors are
considered the best lawn tractors overall.
The SPEEDEX Tractor Corporation was founded in 1935 by Harold Pond, who is considered the developer of the first four wheel riding lawn tractor in North America. Pond developed the "SPEEDEX" line of tractors in Ravenna, Ohio. He was responsible for many of today's innovations found in the lawn and garden tractor industry.
The SPEEDEX Model B was the first Lawn tractor with an air cooled engine and pneumatic tires. It had tiller steering, a Briggs & Stratton Model ZZ air cooled engine, and the tractor utilized a Ford Model A transmission and a Ford Model T rear axle which was narrowed to suit the tractor.
When the SPEEDEX was introduced and advertised nationally, his new riding tractor sold faster than his factory could produce them.
Nowadays, John Deere lawn tractors rule the market. The 42-inch John Deere X304 lawn tractor gets the highest ratings in reviews for smooth, even cutting, as well as easy changes between side discharging, mulching and bagging. Four-wheel steering makes it easy to maneuver around obstacles and the tight 15-inch turning radius leaves a smaller circle of uncut grass than most lawn tractors (which means less trimming).
In addition to automatic transmission and cruise control, the X304 is loaded with conveniences for comfortable driving. It's powered by a reliable 17 HP Kawasaki V-twin engine and has a four-year (or 300-hour) warranty. John Deere lawn tractor parts are available nationwide, either used or new.
JD's market share is under threat now
that the Bolens M762F is considered the best
buy
for a light duty lawn tractor.
Manual gear-shift is about as basic as you can get. Owners say the Bolens M762F is fine for light duty.
While not the most comfortable tractor, the 38-inch deck cuts a narrower swath compared to others. Overall, Bolens owners say their tractors are fine for flat lawns of up to an acre in size.
