Used fishing boats are not always the bargain they appear to be

When buying used fishing boats, never underestimate the importance of condition.

Your life and the lives of the people onboard rely on the boat to keep them safe.

The most recent report issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, showed, 5,705 reported accidents, 4,062 injuries and 750 fatalities. They further reported, "capsizing and falls overboard are the most reported types of fatal accidents and account for over half (56%) of all boating fatalities."

In addition, used outboard motors were responsible for "machinery system failure," reported as the eighth highest factor, accounting for 276 accidents and 23 fatalities. Also many accidents can be avoided by choosing the right boat type for the activity and water conditions.

However, buying a neglected boat should be avoided, unless you intend to invest a lot of time and money towards upgrades and replacements. Repairs often require a lot of outboard motor parts.

Most people don't realize that fiberglass boats, especially those produced before 1995, have a good amount of wood in them. Most manufactures use marine grade plywood as structural components, such as stringers and sub-decks. 

One of the problems that occur if the boat is allowed to sit uncovered, unventilated in the rain, is the wood sub-deck (under the fiberglass) begins to delaminate (rot), causing soft spots.

Other problems relating to fiberglass structural integrity make what most people thought was a indestructible plastic boat a dangerous proposition if laminated layers of fiberglass delaminate, weakening its structure and reducing its strength.

When your family's safety is involved, it's a good idea to have a qualified marine mechanic or surveyor inspect every boat before purchasing it.
